Fitness this and fitness that…We hear it everywhere. Fit and fitness fly around like little fat pigs on trampolines in the media these days. They are all over the place!
I stumbled today across a definition of fitness. Got me thinking about my definition of fitness and how kettlebells relate to it. (Read my post “What are russian kettlebells?“)
Fitness is defined by how well you fit something, right? If you’re fit for a task, well, your fitness is up to par.
There are many fitnesses, of course, the one fitness that I was directing my attention to was [tag]physical fitness[tag].
The definition of fitness listed the following attributes necessary to be considered physically fit:
- Accuracy
- Agility
- Balance
- Body Composition
- Cardiovascular endurance
- Coordination
- Flexibility and joint range of motion
- Power
- Speed
- Stamina
- Strength
- Mental and Emotional Health
This particular definition of fitness rings true to me.
In my humble opinion Russian Kettlebell Training and Kettlebell Juggling in particular are the ultimate tools in creating and improving fitness.
- Accuracy? You betcha! Ever tried Kettlebell Snatches? How about behind the back throw and catches with a 16kb kettlebell? Can’t do them without developing accuracy and precision in the movement
- Agility? With kettlebells, quick feet are happy feet. In kettlebell juggling athlete must respond quickly and change his body position to prepare for the next throw. Agility? Yes please!
- Balance. Kettlebell Snatches, even swings develop a sense of balance. Not to mention Turkish Get Ups and Windmills. Yes, kettlebell training will help you develop the balance of a circus rope walker.
- Body Composition. Raise your hand if you lost fat and gained muscle from kettlebell work. Oh yes! I see many hands. Kettlebell Training will “hack the fat off” in a hurry.
- Cardiovascular endurance. Russian kettlebell training is a cardiovascular endurance training[tag] bottled up in a an iron ball. Anyone who has done [tag]kettlebell swings for more then one minute knows that. Majority of kettlebell exercises engage many, many muscles, thus providing incredible demand on cardiovascular system[tag]. [tag]Training with kettlebells will give you a strong heart and lungs.
- Coordination. Going back to kettlebell snatches. Coordination is a must in this straight forward movement. If we take kettelbell training to a different level – kettlebell juggling, demand on coordination and it’s development becomes apparent.
- Flexibility and joint range of motion. In order to do [tag]classic kettlebell exercises[tag](snatches, jerks, cleans and presses) one must posses muscle balance and proper range of motion. When using kettlebells, I often see an incredible improvement in shoulder and [tag]hip mobility[tag] and range of motion increase. Yep, it works.
- Power! Are you kidding me? Kettlebell will increase your ability to generate power or your money back!
- Speed. NFL loves kettlebell training and those guys are all about the speed. I personally witness many already talented athletes improve their times and run personal best after training with kettlebells.
- Stamina. Ever tried a 5 or 10 minute snatch test? Or go juggle 16kilo kettlebell for 5 minutes. I rest my case…
- Strength. I witness huge improvements in strength with my clients through kettlebell training. Women in my classes use(press, jerk, swing) weights that they never ever thought that they could do. Kettlebells and strength go together like Russians and Vodka(I’m Russian, I can say it..)
- Mental and Emotional Health. This is an important factor. Kettlebell training helps me to relax my mind by focusing on the bells. As I am doing my KB juggling routine, my mind is blank and every worry, every negative thought is gone. Personally, Kettlebell Training is a vital part of my Mental and Emotional Health.
Kettlebell is the ultimate Fitness tool. It changes lives. It changed mine.
