Why do you train?

Today’s post on Mark Reifkind’s blog (http://rifsblog.blogspot.com/) resonated and stayed with me. In the post he talks about his transition from training for competition to training for wellness and fitness, training for life. It struck a chord with me as I too went through the similar transformation.

When I started weightlifting at the age 14 the goal was to get strong and big. If steroids were available to me at that point, I would probably have taken the substances. I was so impatient! Health, wellness and balance were not a concern at that time.

After moving to the United States and a bit older and somewhat wiser, focus shifted to Track and Field. All energy was on competition. Faster times, longer jumps, explosive workouts…

Knees aching? Doesn’t matter!

Lower back screaming? I’ll feel better tomorrow!

Sprained ankle? I’ll walk it off…

Was I in great shape then? Yes, but not really.

Later as I traded office environment for a gym and chose to be fitness trainer, ironically fitness was the last thing on my mind.

What was the first? Vanity! Bodybuilding and handsome body became my focus.

6% body fat? Sure! Yet when I’d go grocery shopping, my back would tighten up and hurt. When I was simply standing, I was in pain!

By a mere chance I stumbled upon Postural Correction technique called Muscle Balance and Function(r)

It changed my training, my fitness approach and how I practice and teach fitness. It changed my life and my outlook on what the training should be.

The goal now is to be able to keep up with the kids and at some point grand kids. Be healthy, thriving and preserve the ability to handle all the things that life throws at you.

Moving? No problem!

Standing all day during a workshop? Never felt better!

Running around with the kids? Running them to the ground!

Vitality, health, function and happiness are my goals now.

Why do you train?
